Rum co*cktails & Tiki drinks

It might seem kind of strange to us today, but people in the 1950s and 60s took parties to an entirely new level. It’s really the first time in history that the middle class had enough free time and disposable income to create wild theme parties on a regular basis. I mean, there were dinner parties where people actually dressed up to come to your house. Imagine Hawaiian luau parties complete with torches and grass skirts, poker parties, and … well… you name it.

I was growing up during that time and I can remember sitting on the stairs and watching my parents sip a rum co*cktail and laugh with their friends. I can remember sleepily sitting in my dad’s lap, looking up at the stars, listening to their guests’ voices turn into a buzz. As I nodded off during Hawaiian Luaus in the yard, I though my parents’ parties were elegant and magical. I imagined that someday I’d grow up and throw those amazing parties too.

Life is so different now, isn’t it? Those kinds of parties are way out of style. Most of us don’t have the time or the disposable income to throw them. But here’s the good news. We can still enjoy those great Tiki drinks that were so very popular!

Low carb co*cktail !

This low carb Caribbean Rum Punch recipe is a classic from those days. Well, maybe not the low carb part. Tiki drinks are a category of co*cktail that is based on a romanticized version of what people think they’d drink in the Caribbean, or Polynesia, or some other exotic locale. They were a staple of those long ago summer parties. The Caribbean Rum Punch is a traditional rum punch recipe used in the West Indies made of a combination of fruit juice and rum . Of course fruit juice has too many carbs for the low carb lifestyle so I had to make some adjustments.

Low carb rum drinks?

How do you make rum drinks low carb? A normal rum mixed drink have lots of sugar from things that are added. Things like fruit juice like cranberry juice, simple syrup, and other things that add calories and sugar. This low carb rum drink recipe is made with flavored water enhancers I love so much. They taste just like the fruit juices in a rum punch co*cktail without adding carbs. That’s the trick, how to recreate the tropical flavors such as orange juice, pineapple juice, and fruit punch without all that sugar. These flavored water enhancers make your keto drink just delicious. The other nice thing is you don’t need to use flavored rums like coconut rum . Dark rum works just fine. I don’t know what it is about Jamaican rum , but it does have a unique flavor and works well with this caribbean rum co*cktail recipe . I skip the grenadine as just one tablespoon has 9 grams of sugar. 9 !

To transport myself to a tropical locale, I just add one of those little drink umbrellas, some vintage looking cat eye sunglasses, and I’m ready to party Madmen style. I know the show has been over for a couple of years but I still watch it on Netflix once in awhile…because… memories. ? Please note how similar this and a Jamaican rum punch recipe is. I checked out many different recipes and the differences are very subtle to negligible. Oh and you can add a maraschino cherry for color, just don’t eat it as it’s filled with sugar . Those things are soaked in a sugary simple syrup dyed with some kind of crazy red coloring. Healthline writes about the 6 reasons to avoid them.
